Timmy

Age: 3 yr

Weight: 65 lb

Looking for a Special Home for a Special Golden Retriever!

This handsome boy has so much love to give, but he needs a home that understands that not every Golden Retriever fits the stereotypical happy-go-lucky, loves-everyone mold.

Timmy’s incredibly dog social and genuinely enjoys the company of other dogs!

His ideal home would be one that offers consistency, predictability, and structure. Because young children are inherently unpredictable (as they should be!), Timmy is looking for a home without small children where he can feel secure and comfortable in his environment.

On the flip side, Timmy can be fearful and uncomfortable around unfamiliar people and needs a family who understands that building trust takes time. He isn’t the type of dog who necessarily wants to greet every new person or be approached and handled by strangers. He does best when given space, allowed to initiate interactions on his own terms, and supported by people who recognize and respect his boundaries. His future family should be comfortable managing introductions, advocating for him in social situations, and understanding that he may never be a dog who enjoys attention from everyone he meets.

He also has ongoing allergies that are currently well controlled with medication. His future family must be committed to continuing his prescribed medication, monitoring his symptoms, and of course ongoing veterinary care to keep him healthy and comfortable.

At a Glance

  • Health Status: Has allergies that are currently well managed with medication. Will need continued medication and routine veterinary care to maintain his comfort.

  • Major Personality Traits: Dog-social, sensitive to unfamiliar people, and most comfortable with consistency, structure, and predictable interactions. Needs time and space to build trust with new people.

  • Interaction with Dogs: Very dog social! Genuinely enjoys canine companionship.

  • Interaction with Cats: Unknown.

  • Child Requirements: No small children. Best suited for a home where interactions and daily routines are predictable.

  • Fence Requirements: A fenced yard would be nice but is not required.

  • General Activity Level: Low to medium energy.

  • Work Schedule Best Suited For: A household able to provide a consistent routine and meet his daily needs.

  • Leash Manners: Generally manageable on leash but may pull when frightened or uncomfortable. Needs a handler who can recognize signs of stress and help him navigate situations without forcing interactions.

  • Degree of Training Needed: Would benefit from continued confidence-building, positive experiences with unfamiliar people, and an adopter committed to ongoing behavioral management. Experience reading canine body language and advocating for a dog’s boundaries is important.

We’re not looking for someone to change who he is. We’re looking for someone who will understand him.

Someone who recognizes that a dog doesn’t have to love every stranger to be a wonderful companion. Someone who understands that management isn’t failure, that predictability creates security, and that meeting a dog’s needs is part of loving them. Timmy deserves a home where he can settle in, feel safe, enjoy his dog friends, and be loved for exactly who he is.

If you’re someone who appreciates a dog with a little more nuance and has the patience, compassion, and commitment to give him the life he deserves, he might just be your perfect match.
