Niko is available to applicants with applications submitted on or before 6/7/26.

Niko is a handsome 2-year old English Cream Golden Retriever searching for his forever home. He was recently  brought to the United States but arrived with an orthopedic concern and was ultimately surrendered to rescue.

He has done an incredible job acclimating to life in a home and is housebroken, crate trained, learning commands (i.e., sit and down), and trusted to be out of his crate for long stretches alone. He is still frightened by some loud noises (i.e., explosions on TV shows) and new experiences (i.e., balloons), but with gentle reassurance and encouragement he has overcome every situation with ease. He has done wonderfully with kids, both ours and friends, allowing them to walk, train, pet and play with him with zero issues. He seems more comfortable with women, expressing hesitation when encountering men, though he continues to build confidence with positive experiences.

He is the happiest when around other dogs and would thrive in a home with a canine companion. He is active and enjoys daily walks and hikes of up to 3 miles, sometimes carefully collecting pinecones to add to his growing collection.  Due to some arthritis in his elbows,  he can’t be a regular running partner and should limit stairs.

He can pull on a leash, especially when encountering squirrels and deer, but is easily corrected and learning to walk well on a short leash. He’s a morning dog, exhibiting lots of energy first thing and napping through the afternoon. The retriever is also strong in Niko, as he happily chases his ball throughout the house for as long as we’re willing to indulge him. Niko would love a fenced  yard where he can continue to hone his retriever instincts.

Niko is ready to find a family searching for a sweet, loving and snuggly companion. With some patience as he encounters new things and learns new lessons, he will flourish and reward his forever family with endless love, companionship, and plenty of Golden Retriever charm.
