Gustoff is a sweet, gentle boy with a heart as golden as his coat. He loves a good game of fetch — whether it’s a ball or a frisbee, he’s always ready to play! He has wonderful manners, takes treats ever so gently, and is a trustworthy house companion who does not need a crate. Bonus: unlike many typical golden retrievers, Gustoff is a very neat water drinker!
Gustoff gets super excited about going for walks, but he’s still building his confidence out in the world. After a few minutes, he’ll often turn around and happily head back home. If you’re looking for a buddy to stroll to the mailbox or enjoy short neighborhood walks, Gustoff is your guy.
Gustoff is an affectionate dog who enjoys closeness with his people, but he is also naturally anxious and appreciates having his boundaries respected. He will often come to you when he wants affection — and that’s the best time to give it. He may growl if touched when he isn’t comfortable, which is simply his way of communicating that he needs space. Listening to his signals helps him feel safe and builds trust.
Feeding & Resource Guarding
Gustoff does resource guard his food with humans and has previously guarded food around another dog. Because of this, feeding time should be simple and structured:
Ask Gustoff to sit.
Place the food bowl down.
Walk away and allow him to eat undisturbed.
Do not reach into or handle the bowl while he is eating (once the bowl is empty is fine).
If a treat is dropped on the floor, it’s best not to attempt to pick it up while he has access to it.
Management is straightforward when these guidelines are followed, and clear routines help Gustoff feel secure.
Gustoff has lived with another dog before but guarded food resources, so at this time we believe he would do best as the only dog in the home. On walks, he generally passes other dogs without much reaction, so future dog compatibility may be possible with experienced management — but for now, we are prioritizing a lower-stress setup for him.
Gustoff’s ideal home would include:
A fenced yard for frisbee games and squirrel watching
No other dogs at this time
Likely no cats, as he tends to chase small animals
Teenagers or older children who can understand and respect boundaries around food and handling
A calm household with few visitors, as new people can make him anxious and he benefits from slow introductions
Someone home often who can provide structure, patience, and consistency
With the right environment, Gustoff will be a loyal, loving companion who thrives on routine, gentle guidance, and quality time with his person. If you have a quiet home and a big heart, Gustoff just might be the perfect match. 💛
Note: Gustoff’s foster family will have first dibs if they decide he’s the right permanent addition to their home.

Foster dogs are looking for a soft place to land and get well, receive training or just relax and decompress from their experiences! As the foster, you have the first chance to adopt them once they are cleared to be posted for adoption. If you are an already approved foster, reach out to the Foster Manager and they will consider you for the dog you are interested in. If you aren’t approved and trained yet, please fill out a Foster Application, linked below. You will be asked for a name and number for vet reference to confirm consistent heartworm prevention purchases, or to get a home check in the case you don’t have a previous/current resident dog (in the last five years).
