Beckett

Age: 3 years

Weight: 67 lb

Beckett is a lover of all people. He is sweet, cuddly and silly. He loves to play, especially with a ball, and loves carrying around a soft stuffy in his mouth.

His ideal home would have multiple people to snuggle and play with, and it would be best if someone was home most of the day because he really just wants to be by your side. He can go into his crate for a few hours if you need to leave so he doesn’t get into anything, but he shouldn’t be in a home where the plan is to leave most of the day and/or have to put him in his crate for extended periods of time regularly.

He likes to go for walks and will walk well with a no-pull harness. He isn’t leash-reactive unless the dog he’s coming across starts it, then he will respond. He also loves to play outside in the yard with toys. He doesn’t need a fenced-in yard, but we do keep him on a long leash while he is outside in our no-fence yard. We haven’t “tested” to see if he will wander away when he is off leash outside, but he doesn’t appear to be a flight risk. He wants to be by his people!

He gets along well with dogs and likes to play. He lived with other dogs before coming to NRGRR and his current foster has a resident female golden retriever. Beckett and his current female dog foster-sister don’t play very often together (they do get along just fine), but he will play a lot with a friend’s higher-energy male dog. He seems to read the energy of other dogs and responds well in observations of his playfulness so far.

He likes to sleep in the bed or on the bedroom floor in either the adults’ room or our teenage son’s room, but I would recommend keeping the bedroom door closed so he doesn’t find any mischief. He will sleep through the night just fine and will wait for you to tell him it’s time to get up for the day. He loves to be on the couch with his people when it’s time to wind down for the night, and forgets he isn’t a lap dog. He is a big snuggly baby!

We live on a quiet cul-du-sac, and he is mostly quiet around the house, but when people or deliveries come to the porch, his poodle side comes out and he will bark loudly. Because of this, I would say if you live on a busy street, I could see him barking a lot.

He loves to meet new people, BUT he will have to wear a belly-band or similar diaper style accessory when he meets new people for the first time. He has a “nervous tinkle” where he will pee just a little bit when he gets overly excited meeting new people for the first time. We have used his belly band out at a brewery, and it works like a charm. We have had friends come over to our house, and he will wear his belly band and also do just fine. He actually pees less in the belly band than if he wasn’t wearing anything. He does NOT wear his belly band while he is at home with just his foster family, it’s really just an over-excited meeting new people type of thing.  He is house-broken and will not pee or poop inside the house.

He is a good boy and will listen to you when he hears the word “no,” but he can get into mischief if he is left unattended or the home isn’t “Beckett-proof.” What does this mean? Beckett won’t steal food or tear up bathroom tissue in front of you, but if you leave him alone, he will take food off a surface he can reach, or go into your bathroom garbage to tear up tissue. If you catch him and say NO he will look guilty and listen. Because of this habit, I would say it’s worth considering if there are really young children in your family, would you be able to make sure he can’t get into dangerous items, especially food that isn’t good for dogs?
