Andy

Age: 1.5 yr

Weight: 55 lb

Andy wants to know if you want to help an undersocialized Golden Retriever turn into a loved family member?  If so, Andy will reward you with endless love, snuggles, kisses and will provide you with lots of laughter watching him appreciate small pleasures  - BALL IS LIFE!

Andy came from a breeder environment.  He is around 1.5 years old and very shy with all things new.  While it is likely that he had never left the property where he was born, Andy is learning that the world is not so scary - as long as he has a furry friend by his side!   Once familiar and comfortable, he is a happy, goofy and active dog.

With patience and a gentle approach, Andy has turned into a typical family dog.  He very much follows the lead of the other dogs in the house - when they nap, he naps right next to them.   A calm home and a solid routine will help him settle in more quickly as well as one or a pack of dog mentors!  In his current foster home, his wonderful qualities include:

  • No accidents in the house

  • High energy in spurts but then will settle and nap next to his fur buddies

  • LOVES ALL Toys BUT BALLS are THE BEST - he will retrieve tennis balls for as long as your arm holds out

  • Sleeps in crate

  • Sits for treats and meals and going in and out (well, still working on holding the wait a bit longer!)

  • Usually comes when called

  • Leash walking:  Andy will walk beautifully on leash with another dog but can buck like a bronco and is easily startled so a firm grip and precautions are necessary!!

  • Barks when scared but will stop when redirected and treated.

  • Rides nicely in the truck - with a little training, now he jumps right in.

  • Has been well-behaved hanging out at a restaurant with another dog by his side.

What Andy needs:

  • DOG MENTOR:  Another Dog is A MUST - At least one young, playful, friendly dog - THE MORE dogs the better; he's lived with 3 other dogs beautifully - matching the energy of each

  • FENCE:  Following STRICT Escape Prevention strategies - Adopter should order a GPS tracker for an added layer of safety.

  • SOCIALIZATION:  Willing to be patient and let him settle into his new life at his pace - it can be very disheartening and discouraging but HE WILL GET THERE with proper handling and curating positive experiences.  The transition to a new environment will set him back but hopefully he will trust you more quickly provided you don’t put pressure on him.  We can share what has worked; what has not worked and we have a trainer who is available to help.

  • WOMEN are preferred over men but he will learn to trust the man in the house with proper handling. Teenagers who want to throw the ball all day would be great!  No children under 12.

  • EXERCISE - He is covering 4-5 miles per day - mostly running in the backyard!

  • ROUTINE & a non-chaotic schedule - He settles in once he knows the routine.
