Fostering
Why is there a need for Foster Homes?
All of our rescued dogs live with foster families while they are waiting for adoption. The number of foster homes that we have directly affects the number of dogs we can save. We need more foster homes!
What is a Golden Retriever Foster Home?
A foster takes a rescue golden into their home and learns as much about their foster dog as possible, so that a good match can be made between an applicant and rescue golden. A rescue dog could be in your care from two days to many months, depending on health and age of the foster dog. When you decide to foster a rescue dog, you may be asked to:
pick up the dog from one of our vets (where it would have gone through a medical protocol),
take the dog to the vet for any medical needs,
work with socialization of the dog such as housetraining (if needed) and teaching basic commands,
include the dog in household activities with the family,
provide food and regular exercise for the foster dog,
talk to potential adopters about the dog,
have potential adopters visit the dog,
serve as an advocate for the dog in selection of the best adoption match,
follow up on the foster dog (usually a week after adoption) to ensure all is going well with the new family,
complete paperwork and promptly mail (including money & donations) to the NRGRR mailbox.
In return, you receive a little slice of Golden goofiness and love. The added bonus is the knowledge that you helped a Golden find a permanent home with people who will cherish him (and a warm glowie feeling in your heart)!
