Health Care for You Adopted Golden
Your new dog has probably been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and checked for internal parasites. You should have been given a form listing the dog's medical history. Keep the following in mind.

Vaccinations
Many are given on a yearly basis. You will not receive the usual reminder that the shots are due the first year, so you will need to remember to take the dog to the vet for an exam one year from the dates indicated on the accompanying form.

Heartworm prevention
Heartworms are internal parasites that live within the chambers of the heart. They are detected by the presence of microfilaria in a blood sample. You MUST give heartworm preventative to your dog YEAR ROUND. With the monthly medicine, it is easy to remember if you give it the first day of every month and make a note on your calendar. Most of the rescue dogs have been started on monthly medication.

Worming
Your dog has been checked at least once for the presence of internal parasites and de-wormed if needed.

Fleas
Your dog needs to be as flea free as possible. However, living here in the warm south means that fleas are present year round. Consult your veterinarian for the newest products on the market for flea control. The Golden Retriever breed is known to be susceptible to skin problems, and fleas only make it worse.
